At present Mr. Wodehouse is on leave, and
I have not had an opportunity of meeting him or of
making myself acquainted directly with his work.
feel, however, that, as the result of the enquiries
which I have made, as set out above, I should not be
justified in recommending him for the new post of
Deputy Inspector General, and I, therefore, support
the recommendation of Sir Cecil Clementi in his
confidential despatch of the 28th of January last.

I
Mr. Wodehouse will attain the age of 53 in September
next. On the 19th of January, 1929, in a minute to
the Captain Superintendent, he asked permission to
retire in the following year on the expiration of
leave, the reason given being that his eyesight was
causing him considerable trouble. He withdrew this
application, however, on the 1st of August, 1929, as
he stated that his eyesight had improved and no longer caused him anxiety.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient, humble servant,
Governor, &c.
